At Family Dentistry & Aesthetics, our doctors are dedicated to restoring the function, appearance, and integrity of your smile. An untreated missing tooth can allow surrounding teeth to shift and ruin the alignment of your smile. When paired with a dental implant, a crown fills the gap left from a missing tooth and prevents changes to your healthy teeth. Our doctors also use crowns to strengthen a weak tooth, as well as hold together a broken tooth.
Drs. Thomas T. Teel and Thomas M. Gilbert in Fort Wayne, IN restore the function of your teeth with the use of dental crowns. We use an off- site laboratory to create your custom-made crown.
We offer a variety of materials to make your crown from. For teeth that are visible when you smile or speak, we recommend porcelain crowns. This material seamlessly blends with your surrounding teeth, which makes your restoration unnoticeable. If you require a crown for a nonvisible tooth, we recommend an all metal or porcelain fused to metal crown. Our doctors use their extensive knowledge and experience to find the best material to meet your unique needs. Our goal is to give you a smile you’ll feel confident to show off.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is used to restore and strengthen a damaged or decayed tooth. This device acts as a protective cap for the affected tooth. It covers the entire tooth, which limits exposure to the delicate nerves and roots found below the enamel. A crown also protects a decayed tooth from further damage and provides a strong chewing and biting surface for normal dentition.
The cap is custom-made from porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or metal. Depending on the location of your unhealthy tooth, Drs. Teel and Gilbert will determine which material best fits your restorative needs. You can expect a natural looking restoration that functions just as a natural tooth would.
Why Would You Need a Crown?
Many patients need a crown because they have a weak or broken tooth that is causing discomfort. In some cases, patients can’t use their damaged tooth and require correction in order to regain their dental function. Not only is a crown used in restorative dentistry, but it’s also used in cosmetic dentistry. If you suffer from a severely discolored tooth, that holds you back from fully embracing your smile, Drs. Teel and Gilbert can place a crown over the flaw and restore your smile.
We recommend the use of dental crowns for patients who want to correct an oddly shaped tooth. Although porcelain veneers are the best choice for fixing misshaped teeth, a crown effectively covers the unattractive tooth.
Patients who undergo root canal therapy can expect a crown after their procedure. After removing decayed tooth matter, the crown replaces the damaged enamel. Dental crowns are used to replace missing teeth, as well. If you have a single missing tooth, we can surgically place a dental implant into your jawbone and attach a crown to the base once it has healed. In the case that you have multiple missing teeth, we place two crowns on either side of the gap and attach a dental bridge.
What to Expect
At our dental office, you can expect two appointments to complete your crown procedure. At your first dental visit, Drs. Teel and Gilbert will examine the affected tooth and ensure that the base is strong enough to support a dental crown. If it isn’t, they may use a dental filling to get your tooth to where it needs to be. Next we will prepare your tooth for the crown by smoothing the surface. A dental impression will be taken of your teeth, and the lab will use the impression to craft your permanent dental crown. Before you leave this visit, we will place a temporary crown over your damaged tooth to protect it until your permanent one is created.
At your second visit, we will remove the temporary crown and permanently affix your new one. With proper oral hygiene and care, you can expect long-lasting results from your dental crown.
